A thermal simulation is a replication of thermal behavior on components using numerical methods. This provides us with a powerful tool in the product development process. It is particularly powerful because it enables a complete calculation of the temperature distribution around, in or through components and can map the associated thermal operating conditions. In the context of thermodynamic simulations, for example, the temperature rise over time can also be calculated and the location of the maximum temperature peak at each observation time can be precisely estimated.

The aim of a thermal simulation is to

  • Optimization of the performance of a component for the appropriate operating temperature
  • Determination of the temperature distribution
  • Determination of the effect of thermal loads on components
  • Visualization of thermal bridges and thermal blockages
  • Determination of the influencing variables for optimizing the heating of components
  • Analysis of heat conduction, heat radiation and convective exchange
  • Optimization of the thermal design

Nowadays, thermal management or thermal simulation is a prerequisite for many components and in many areas such as the automotive sector, electronics, medical technology and even building management. Especially in the development phase of a product or for the optimization of a component, such a simulation is the best tool to specifically determine various factors such as temperature distribution or heat paths or heat losses. Furthermore, another advantage of computer-aided simulation software is that it is possible to create simple simulations of a component within a very short time and to determine promptly whether it has been constructed or designed correctly. In the course of holistic development, thermal design can no longer be separated from mechanical and electrical design. Thus, we are able to master the requirements and challenges not only in thermal design !
